Stand for the Land
No matter where you live, tell your senators to vote NO on HJR 140. The Senate votes this week
I read somewhere that democracy relies on engaged citizens. Well, it’s time to step up folks. Every single one of you has a phone in your pocket.
This week, the Senate will vote on House Joint Resolution 140. Call your Senators no matter where you live, and tell them to vote NO on HJR 140. I wrote an OpEd for the Duluth News Tribune that came out today and you can read that here.
You should get involved regardless of where you live. You might think that this is just a Minnesota problem. There are two reasons why it’s not just a Minnesota problem.
First, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is part of the Superior National Forest. This is federal public land that belongs to all of us. You should care that the most popular wilderness area in the entire public lands system is threatened by a copper-sulfide mine upstream.
Second, the tactic Republicans are using to overturn a 20-year mining ban is a little-used law called the Congressional Review Act. It had only ever been used once until “you know who” came along. Now he’s used it 38 of the 42 times it’s been used. This would be the first time it’s ever been used to overturn a public land order. If they succeed here, they will use it everywhere they can get away with it. Do you have some federal public land near where you live? Do you know some special interests who want to scrape some short-term cash out of it? Well, I’d ask you to please help stop this type of tactic here near the BWCA before they try it where you live.
It’s our land. It all belongs to every single one of us. Please speak up and defend it. Thank you.
